it’s a defense mechanism to perceived failure, if you expected it, it can’t upset you as bad, so you don’t have to try as hard because it doesn’t matter as much if things don’t go your way.
this is a real observed thing amongst students who purposefully sabotage their sleep or something to that effect before an exam so they can say “oh well I slept poorly so that’s why I failed, of course I couldn’t put in as much effort”
