Welcome to tranistan.com. This instance is provided as a private community space. By registering an account or using this instance, you agree to the following terms and policies.

1. Terms of Service

  • Age Requirement: You must be at least 18 years of age to register an account or use this service. By accessing the site, you represent and warrant that you meet this age requirement.
  • User Conduct: This is a privately operated instance. We reserve the right to ban accounts, remove content, or restrict access at our sole discretion. Harassment, hate speech, doxxing, and illegal content are strictly prohibited.

  • Service Availability: This service is provided “as is” and “as available.” We do not guarantee uninterrupted service or data preservation and reserve the right to shut down the instance or terminate accounts without prior notice.

2. Privacy Policy & Infrastructure

We believe privacy is a fundamental right, especially for marginalized communities. This document explains exactly what information our server sees, why it needs it to function, and what we do with it.

The short version: We collect the absolute minimum data required to keep the site running. We do not sell your data, we do not run third-party trackers, and we are entirely funded by donations.

2.1. The Data We Collect (And Why)

To use Tranistan.com, our server (running open-source Lemmy software) needs to process a few pieces of information:

  • Account Details: Your username and your password (which is securely hashed—we cannot see your actual password).
  • Email Address: We require an email to sign up to prevent spam, and so you can reset your password. We highly recommend using a secure email alias (like SimpleLogin or Addy.io).
  • Your Activity: The posts, comments, upvotes/downvotes, and profile information you submit.
  • IP Addresses & Server Logs: Our server temporarily logs IP addresses for session management, rate-limiting, and fighting spam. We strongly encourage you to use a trusted VPN so that our server logs a proxy IP rather than your real location.
2.2. What We DON’T Do With Your Data
  • No Selling or Sharing: We will never sell, rent, or trade your personal information to anyone.
  • No Hidden Trackers: We do not use third-party analytics (like Google Analytics) or advertising trackers (like the Meta Pixel).
  • No Federation: Tranistan.com is a non-federated, closed instance. Your posts, comments, and profile data are not broadcasted to other servers on the Fediverse.
2.3. A Warning About Direct Messages

Please be aware that Direct Messages (DMs) on Lemmy are not end-to-end encrypted. While only you and the recipient can see them in the app, they are stored in plain text on our server’s database. Site administrators can theoretically read them. Do not use Lemmy DMs to share highly sensitive information, passwords, or identifying details. Use an encrypted messenger like Signal instead.

2.4. Law Enforcement & Data Requests

We will not voluntarily hand over user data to any government or law enforcement agency. We will only comply with data requests if legally compelled to do so by a valid court order in our hosting jurisdiction (New York City, USA). Because we encourage the use of VPNs and burner emails, our goal is to have as little identifying information to hand over as legally possible.

2.5. Your Rights & Deletion

You own your words. You can edit or delete your posts and comments at any time, or delete your account entirely through your settings.

Please note that standard account deletion leaves “tombstones” (e.g., your post will remain, but the username will say [deleted]). However, we offer a complete data purge. If you want all of your data and history completely wiped from our instance, simply email us at [email protected] or send a direct message through Lemmy to one of the instance admins. We will execute a full “purge” action on your account to remove your footprint entirely.

2.6. Changes to this Policy

If we make changes to this policy, we won’t try to hide it in the fine print. We will pin a public announcement to the top of the instance so the community can read and discuss the changes.

3. Copyright & DMCA Policy

tranistan.com respects the intellectual property rights of others and complies with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Because our servers are located in the United States, we are subject to US copyright law.
