a few years ago I tried learning 日本語 but I stopped and have since forgotten nearly everything (which wasn’t much to begin with lol). basically I can only read hiragana, katakana with varying accuracy and maybe like 10 kanji

I speak swedish, english, and am in the process of learning spanish and portuguese

very understandable, cool that u can read kana though!! ur definitely a bigger languagefag than me i think, im not even truly bilingual cause im dogshit at japanese and its my best secondary language lol. any reason why u decided to also learn Portuguese at the same time? ik they are like mutually intelligible right? so its basically some patterned differences right? that is kinda cool

yeah, the mutual intelligibility between spanish and portuguese I believe is the highest out of all other romance languages

I don’t like saying this type of thing because it will have me crucified by non-yanks online but I’m swedish-american and have kind of a foreign (or uncanny at the very least) accent in both languages despite being ‘bilingual’ and proficient enough in both of them that I really shouldn’t have it at all :lolcry:

best of luck in your japanese studies! one of my friends suggested I try it again but I think I’m gonna stick with ES + PT for now heh

Whoa there, no reason to melt down, it’s a really obnoxious and common error, I spotted it precisely because I’m vulnerable to it too.

i actually would be interested i was confused at first but I think both are mostly written in Latin now? Id that right? Did you have to learn to read in Arabic for either of them?

ok that’s cool, both Swahili and Somali are agglutinative so you slap shit together to make big words instead of mostly isolated words like English. i also think it’s neat Swahili puts subject object verb word order. Makes it similar to Japanese which is also agglutinative and SOV. also Cool Swahili is written in Arabic sometimes I’ve never learned an RTL writing system . i couldn’t come up with anything to ask other than lame stuff like “waow how is x writing system vs y” which usually nobody has an opinion on but yeah

you have a good eye, but you made a small error. While Somali can be written in arabic script (Osmanya or Ga’ez historically) our official orthography has been Latin based since 1972. You would only see it that way if you learned it through older texts or maybe certain regional contexts. (maybe with some of the more rural areas, like the south where I am from.)

gotcha that’s cool! i always like asking about the changes. for instance Korean had a pretty gradual transition away from han glyphs to hangul and ppl sometimes learned the old script in school. i asked my Vietnamese friend similarly as they historically wrote in han script instead of latin like now but apparently there, nobody learns the old way except for like calligraphy that isn’t really meant for anyone to read

I still know the old way, though the transition was made long after I was born. It’s a shame many don’t, since the calligraphy is so pretty
