i’ve read up a little on the tressless wiki but i’m specifically interested in the ramifications of starting minoxidil for a person who recently changed their dominant hormone. does it give permanent growth or do you have to stay on it forever? and if you do stop it could you end up worse than where you started?
idk my corners are starting to fill in but they’re still not terminal hairs and i’m worried e alone is never going to fix my hairline. but i also don’t want to start using unnecessary products and put myself in a worse position.
anybody have info/experience related to any of this?
oh, I know this! I considered minoxidil (though I decided on dute instead.) In people with testosterone dominant systems, DHT acts like a slow acting weed killer that makes the hair follicles smaller and smaller until they stop growing.
Minoxidil doesn’t really stop the weed killer, it just pumps it full of extra nutrients and and widens blood vessels to the follicle. min growth is not permanent. you will have to stay on it forever. (this isn’t really that big a deal) your hair will become dependent on the artificial environment it creates to grow. you will NOT end up worse than you started. You might see hairloss in the beginning, but that’s just all your follicles resetting at once. should YOU use it? It kind of depends on what you want. If you have peach fuzz already, estrogen is doing plenty heavy lifting already. But minoxidil can help push those hairs into becoming full long strands. But it is a greasy and messy habit. You’ll also have to do it forever to keep those specific hairs. also it kills cats.tysm! so, if i used min where vellus hair was already starting to grow in, would i still lose it if i went off min? i guess what i’m asking is could i use min just as a temporary way to speed up growth that is already happening?
you would not lose the hair you already had, no. you would only lose the amount of hair you would have lost if you never started it. Min is never temporary though. lifelong commitment.
I just take dutasteride with it myself.
forgive my sloppy typing.
I’ve had good experiences with oral minox. I started it around a month after E monotherapy. I’ve heard through the grapevine it’s effects can be permanent or semi permanent after like 7 years, but that’s unfounded. I’d plan to stay on it forever or for the foreseeable future. As for worse than when you started, that’s impossible to say definitively, hairs complicated, but if your on E it’s pretty unlikely.
My temples were one of the places I noticed regrowth. I’ve been on minox for 3 months, E for 4. It’s not super dense there (yet, hopefully), but the hairs are long enough to grab and pull, and a lot of them are blonde like the rest of my hair. I can’t tell you how much came from minox, and how much came from E, since I started them so close together. Found the side effects of oral to be pretty negligible so far. Taking 5mg oral just once in the morning.
tl;dr, you’d probably get much more temple regrowth on minox alongside HRT, and yes you have to stay on it. Gonna take this time to shout out microneedling. Either by itself or alongside minox. Can be started/stopped whenever, the derma pen you use to do it can be used for skincare, and it’s not just dude science. Hundreds of legit studies have proven it’s really good for hair regrowth.
