Why would they say that…Dragon Quest is extremely archaic even its newer releases and remakes. I like older games, but not even I am such a purist that I would recommend that over the remakes. They also look really cool.
Another recommendation is Octopath Traveler 2 btw., I honestly think it is one of the greatest JRPGs of the last 20 years. I adore it.
Yeah, I get it, being somewhat of a game historian is also my main reason for liking DQ. That being said, if you did not play many JRPGs, unlike me, I think you should play lots of other stuff first. It makes playing DQ better. Playing DQ before let’s say FFVI is pretty crazy to me. In my opinion you should postpone playing DQ.

Yeah i really like the hd-2d art style too, I’ve had the remake of Live-a-live on my wishlist for a while
Ive always really loved the look of games with 2d characters in 3d settings, and HD-2D games are like eye candy to me
Live A Live remake is nice, but Octo 2 mogs it. Actual peak game.

Disconnected. Octo 1 is okay, but nothing special. Feels a bit like a test run compared to its sequel. 2 though, that one is an actual gem.
