That MBTA EMD F40PH is one of the few trains I’ve taken in the USA. I was on a holiday there last year to see a good friend in Lowell (after a weekend layover in Iceland).

Whilst part of me loves the scale and industrial grime of many US trains, fuck me if it was rough ride. I even used it to go to and from Boston on St Patrick’s day which was one of the most uncomfortable train journeys of my life, made worse by all the drunk 16 years singing the the US national anthem and calling me a fag.

Still, on the same trip, I also took one of these to visit Salem and the journey was considerably more pleasant. Though if I had a time machine I would have loved to see the old 1870s station there that was demolished in the 50s.
