while taking my BP and heart rate nurse tells me she needs to draw blood from my finger to check iron levels.

she pricks my finger and squeezes firmly. blood comes out in a tiny geyser. its so red, my eyes almost have to adjust to how saturated the color is against the drab grays of the room. she squeezes again and more blood dances out for her. can’t stop looking.

“Oh, it looks like you’re heart rate is a little bit above range to donate. That’s pretty normal for new donors, so let’s try taking it one more time.”

deep breathing. vagal maneuvers. doing everything to lower heart rate.

notices alt looking girl hooked up to one of the plasma extraction machines.

it’s over. heart rate comes back higher the second time.

nurse lectures me on staying hydrated and avoiding caffeine, but she doesn’t know…

i leave with nothing but a newfound blood kink.
