I wanted to make a post addressing the latest controversy because I feel like it’s our duty as administrators to make sure this community stays a safe space for its members.
Context
On March 22, we received reports that pizzaboy was 17 years old. We only banned her today when her age was made public on the site.
The reasons behind our initial reluctance to ban her immediately were:

We frankly believe that this community is a useful resource to everyone regardless of their age. This site is one of the few communities where everyone can freely discuss DIY HRT and other resources without fear. It is because of that that we were reluctant to ban someone who was 17 and probably didn’t have many other communities to turn to.

Banning a minor is only going to make the minor create another account and be quiet about their age. We didn’t feel that banning her was going to meaningfully protect her, as she was probably just going to create an alt account. Pizzaboy has admitted to creating alt accounts for some time now.

Our approach at enforcing rules is contextual. If we feel that a person who is breaking a rule is being a dick about it, we enforce it. If the rule being broken does not really disrupt or endanger the community, we just let it slide. Since pizzaboy’s age was only revealed to us through leaked direct messages with her, we considered that the rule didn’t need to be enforced at the time, since she did disclose that information in private.
We recognize this decision was wrong in retrospect and we understand that it has made a lot of people uncomfortable. We are truly sorry, and we promise to do better.
Moving forward
The “no minors” rule will be enforced with a Zero Tolerance policy. If anyone has proof that someone in here is a minor, be it from public posts from the server or from private conversations, feel free to contact us and we will terminate the offending account.
We understand that a lot of you feel very uncomfortable about this situation, especially given the recentness of the /r/mtf debacle. We encourage you to comment below your opinions on the matter and suggestions on how to improve our moderation.
I’m also tagging this post as a Megathread to hopefully redirect all conversations about this drama here and preventing spam. We urge you to please keep the conversation about the drama contained here.

Agreed. Why are NSFW communities allowed to be seen by everyone?
Unfortunately lemmy does not allow us to have this level of granularity when managing access to communities. It’s something I’ve been in conversation with the developers about, but they simply don’t care about it enough. Hopefully when lemmy 1.0 is released, we can have NSFW subs with a more thorough vetting process.
I agree. It was a very bad decision. I feel like we didn’t make the correct calculation when balancing the pros and cons. We promise to do better in this regard in the future.
when i saw that, i told pizzaboy not to interact with nsfw stuff if she wants to stay here, i also told boymodertoucher not to tell her anything weird(bc boymodertoucher says sexual stuff often)
now she will come back on alt and none of us will know it’s her, I won’t know either so i can’t tell her to not post nsfw, i can’t tell boymodertoucher to not tell her sexual stuff, i know she will come back bc she has been doing this on reddit for over a year, most minors banned won’t come back but she will, banning her is just turning a blind eye

Learn from the mistake and do better. Thats all that can be asked at this point. (which im glad ur acknowledging) Truly dont wanna see this community die because of one post from a minor (when there are so many hiding in the weeds atp)
That is our intention, yes. Thanks for your understanding. We truly want what’s better for the community, and sadly some decisions that we take turn out to not be in the best interest of the community. We promise to do better in the future.
just a complete unforced error. the excuse that its about diy is stupid, times have moved on. places like r/transsex exist already for under 18s to go. theres also tttteenagers although idk much about it. this should never have been allowed to happen.

Hey everybody, pleaae don’t let this situation divide us. There was a big mistake and an appropriate reaction from the community. Personally I am of the opinion that the moderator team now trying their best and promising to enforce the rule is very good. But I do however think Yash had a rational and that in her mind she probably wanted to be able to “keep an eye” on pizzaboy. It was a wrong decision built on good intent. Now, please let us stand together as a community, advocate for better moderation, hopefully more responsible behavior amongst each other (i.e don’t make weird sexual stuff in DMs). Also don’t let this bad situation allow for internal division.
I too hope that we never end up with Yash or anybody here turning out to be a bad person or an abuser or even 1/100th of an r/mtf moderator. This will never and should never be tolerated.
Also, it is sad that people are leaving and I encourage a lot of people who are understandably upset to consider to please stay because if the good people leave then only the bad people will remain.
