They were stolen from the intersex community and nowadays near exclusively serve to deny transsexuals our true gender. It is not dissimilar from the term “biological male who identifies as female” and its equivalents. If you need to talk about a specific trait e.g. people with a penis you should just say that (as the other commenter said) instead of using the term ‘AMAB’ because even then it’s not entirely accurate

they are extremely useless to describe anything bar the fact that the doctor thay gave birth to you assumed you were x gender based on their assumption about how your genitals looked like at the moment of birth. it’s absurd.

some people who were amab have functioning ovaries and can get pregnant. some people who were afab have penis and testicles. it’s completely useless and it’s only used in contexts where that dumb moment in time is extrapolated to the most intersexist and bio essentialist conclussions that solidifies the transphobic, intersexist notion that your agab has any weight in who you are as a person at all or how your body looks like in the present.

gender assignment is something that happens exactly once in a persons life (usually there might be the cases idk) and does not inherently tell you anything of what their current experience or anatomy is like

It was a term made for intersex ppl to describe what happened to them in the past. “I was assigned male at birth.” it was created to show how doctors were factually wrong in the sexing and that they are something entirely different. some trans people started using the term for the same reasons but it quickly devolved into what we have now. It used to be that you WERE agab but now you ARE abag and thats a scientific fact you cant change. thats an entirely different topic on whether hrt functionally changes your sex (it does)

Honestly, it feels like a way to extract a social/legal designation and apply it in ways that people intend to be some sort of factual, universal truth. I am an AMAB manly male man, but I have a risk factor for osteoporosis pretty on par with my mom. I may be an AMAB male man, but clothes designed for women tend to fit me better (yes, I’ve seen people use AGAB language for clothes shopping lol). Just call me a man if that’s what you want to say.

Honestly everyone who doesn’t instantly see the issue probably has the same ideas as the people who use those terms too much in wrong contexts, don’t think theres much you can do to explain the term itself.

When I hear AFAB excessively used by theyfabs, they’re referring to “people seen socially as women, who have female bodies”. The problem is, well, medical transition. I was AFAB and am seen as male.
