I don’t think most people here have ever seriously thought NOBODY ever transitioned because of social pressure or fetish, there have always been some people that obviously fit those descriptions it’s just bigots typically lack the ability to process nuance since their feelings are just motivated by xenophobia not the desire to understand

yes most trans people are trans because of a trend, although I do think the increased awareness does also lead to more ACTUAL trans people transitioning too

So it’s difficult to find out how to deal with the issue of “bad/fake troons”

if you take it that everyone is inseparable from their social context, then ya it’s a social contagion. i think i reject gender essentialism. like wasn’t i victim of a social contagion when i was cis and hadn’t yet questioned whether i was trans, and everyone around me pushed a cis worldview onto me? direct social intervention by institutions even more worrisome than a contagion? cis people trying to erase trans people is insane, like conversion therapy, governments actively intervening to “encourage citizens ‘to appreciate their sex’ and not ‘become disdainful of their sex’”.
