Welcome to the self-hosted and non-federated tranistan.com Lemmy instance.

Please read the FAQs below to ease your mind:

Q: Why does this exist?

A: We can’t rely on Reddit to preserve our online spaces.

Q: How is tranistan.com better than Reddit in protecting our online spaces?

A: Because the people that created it are all 4tran regulars. We are invested in keeping this site alive for you all to shitpost in peace.

Q: This all feels very sketchy. Is this all hosted on someone’s old laptop in their mother’s basement? How can I know it’s not going to stop working tomorrow?

A: tranistan.com is hosted on a virtual machine through a cloud provider. The cloud provider we’ve chosen has a guaranteed 99.99% uptime monthly.

Q: Okay but what happens when more people join? Won’t it break then?

A: Our instance has enough resources to handle 500+ active daily users at the moment. If we needed to accommodate more users, it would be as easy as allocating more resources for the machine.

Q: Isn’t this all crazy expensive to maintain then? Is this really sustainable for you guys economically?

A: It’s as expensive as a Netflix subscription (with ads). We’ll survive.

Q: There’s too much going on! Where can I post?

A: Right now, c/tranistan is for announcements only. If you want to post, go to c/4tran4. We have lots of other [beautiful communities created by beautiful individuals]. Feel free to create your own!

Q: What is a community?

It’s like a subreddit.

Hope that somewhat clears things up :) Glad to see you here! Welcome!

so in theory we could expand our storage to 250gb on top of what we already have for an extra 5$ a month. right now we have a 50gb ssd. let’s see how fast we fill it up :^)
