Because scientific words in english were inherited from Latin, which had taken the Greek gods and replaced them with Roman equivalents. In Greek, the planets are named after the Greek gods, while in English, the planets are named after the Roman gods. They roughly equate to:
Mercury = Hermes Venus = Aphrodite Earth = Gaia Mars = Ares Jupiter = Zeus Saturn = Cronus Uranus (same name but latinized) = Ouranos Neptune = Poseidon
